Empower Women to Overcome the Effects of
Alcoholism and Other Addictions

About Us:

Georgia Barbour was an educator, artist, and longtime beloved member of the Charlottesville community. In June 2006, she died in a jail cell following a long struggle with alcoholism.

Georgia's Friends have gathered to remember her life and struggle by helping other women build new lives.

The Need:

70% more women are incarcerated in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail than five years ago, the majority of them are for nonviolent, drug-related crimes.

75% of women released without recovery support will return to jail.

50% or more of those who live in a recovery house for at least three months following release are shown to be drug-free a year later.

The cost of incarcerating a woman is four times that of what it costs for a woman to live in a recovery house.

No supervised recovery house exists for women in the Charlottesville area. There are four for men.
